Programs >> Administration
Administration is the focal point for the overall management of the many diversified, beneficially oriented programs offered by the Office of Human Affairs. The responsibilities of the administrative staff include planning and evaluation, budget preparation and control, program development, public relations and related functions.
From 1966 to the present, the administrative staff has secured the funding for, supervised and managed programs that are designed to assist eligible persons in their efforts to become self-sufficient.
In addition to assuming all of the above administrative responsibilities, staff also oversees the following three program components: GED Preparation Program, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and the Newport News Neighborhood Federal Credit Union (NNNFCU).
The GED Preparation Program offers GED instruction and Job Readiness Programs, to persons ages 18 and above, which prepare them to take the Official GED Examination and acquire basic knowledge and skills needed to obtain meaningful employment. Students enrolled in the program will be assessed to determine appropriate placement. They will be taught strategies in preparation for testing, receive practice exercises, practice tests, and mentoring. Participants who qualify to take the Official GED Examination will be referred to an Official GED Registration Office for processing. The program is currently offered at two locations in Newport News: Dickerson Courts and Newport Harbour Community Center. [Top]
The VITA Program provides free tax assistance/preparation to elderly, low-income and disabled individuals. [Top]
