OHA Project Discovery Tidbits
Project Discovery is an educational outreach program. Our goal is to encourage participants to begin exploring post-secondary options as early as possible. In 1986 funds were allocated by the Department of Education to operate the program in Hampton, Virginia. In 1988 the program expanded to Newport News, Virginia. Project Discovery operates out of five schools: Hampton High School & Lindsay Middle School (Hampton, VA) Crittenden Middle School, Heritage High School & Warwick High School (Newport News, VA) For the 2003 -2004 program year, 27 out of 30 graduating seniors went on to post-secondary institutions. For the 2002-2003 program year, 33 out of 35 graduating seniors went on to post-secondary institutions. For the 2001-2002 program year, 41 out of 47 graduating seniors went on to post-secondary institutions. For the 2001-2000 program year, 43 out of 51 graduating seniors went on to post-secondary institutions. Workshops are held on a weekly basis on the high school level and on a bi-weekly basis at the middle schools.
Workshop topics include: High School: Goal Setting, How to Choose a College, Financial Aid, College Admissions, SAT preparation, Money Management, The credit card trap, Self-Esteem, Public Speaking, Conflict Resolution, Job Readiness-Cover Letters & Resumes, etc. Middle School: Goal Setting, Study skills/Test taking, Hygiene, Nutrition, Self-Esteem, Etiquette, Conflict Resolution, Decision Making/Peer pressure, Introduction to College Awareness, etc. Workshops offer participants the benefits of a positive group experience in an educational setting. In addition to workshops, participants visit college in and out of the state of Virginia, attend field trips, partake in community service projects, and fundraisers. Each year high school participants from each of the three high schools served visit numerous colleges and attractions on their Spring Break College tour. Project Discovery has visited: New York Philadelphia Maryland/Washington, DC Atlanta New Orleans Florida North Carolina South Carolina Delaware In June of each year, an end of the year banquet is given for all Project Discovery participants. Participants execute the program, awards & scholarships are also given during this time. Project Discovery also operates a summer program. It usually operates for 8 weeks during the months of July and August. Participants do community service on Tuesdays and enjoy a field trip to local attractions and colleges on Thursdays. To be eligible for enrollment, participants must meet one of the following: · Family income within 200% of the poverty guidelines· Receive free or reduced lunch· Be a first generation college studentTo assist other students who may have related needs and interests, 10% of the participants enrolled in the program may not fall in the previously mentioned categories.
