Brief History:

The Office of Human Affairs Child Care Component officially began operating on June 16, 1997 with the Four-Year-Old Initiative Program under its umbrella. On July 1, 1997, the Trinity After-School Child Enrichment Program which was initially operated by the Newport News Alliance for Youth, joined the ranks of the newly formed child care component. On November 24, 1997, the Infant/Toddler Early Intervention Program began operations.  In September 2001 under agency reorganization Project Discovery came under Children's Services.

images/girl.gif (4434 bytes)a. The Four-Year-Old Initiative Program - The Four Year Old Initiative Program serves 32 four year old children residing in Hampton, Virginia; there are two classrooms with 16 children in each classroom.

There are four staff employed with the Four Year Old Initiative Program:

Operational hours are Mondays through Fridays from 9:15 AM to 4:00 PM.

The Four Year Old Initiative Program operates 9.5 months, beginning the first week in September and ending the third week in June.

The children receive comprehensive services while attending the Four Year Old Initiative Program, including but not limited to social services, health services, nutrition services, transportation services and education services.  The children learn through the Creative Curriculum and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL)s with emphasis on the following skills:  Fine Motor, Gross Motor, Language, Cognitive, Reading Readiness, Math Readiness, Visual-Perceptual, Socialization and Science.

Project Discovery operates 12 months.  Project Discovery is an educational outreach program designed to encourage middle and high school students to prepare early for life after high school.  Project Discovery prepares students for college via weekly workshops, community service projects; culturally enriching activities and college visits.  The students attend workshops on Financial Aid, College Admissions, SAT Preparation, Self-Esteem, Career Exploration, Resume Writing, School Violence, Life Planning/Goal Setting, Study Skills, Test Taking, Budgeting, Anger Management, Conflict Resolution, Critical Thinking and on How to Choose a College.
